Middle School students designed and decorated the book donation boxes that will go into each school.
This summer, the Bulldogs Bookin' Bus will roll into a neighborhood near you! We're excited to announce this mobile library to keep kids reading over break.

Otsego is excited to roll out the Bulldogs Bookin’ Bus - Reading Den of the Dogs mobile library. Parents and staff members collaborated to create this initiative that will provide a summer literacy opportunity for students within the Otsego school district. The Bulldogs Bookin’ Bus will provide children easy access to books because the library comes to them. We hope the mobile library will combat the summer reading loss while increasing student achievement and their excitement for reading!

Research shows reading as few as four or five books during the summer has the potential to prevent a decline in reading achievement. Along with the academic benefit, we hope the Bulldogs Bookin’ Bus will get students excited about reading! We will have staff members driving the bus, special guest readers and students can earn incentives each time they visit. The Bulldogs Bookin’ Bus will target kids in Preschool – 8th grade. “We are very excited to add this learning opportunity for our students over the summer that will also be a lot of fun,” says Superintendent Jeff Haase.

Congratulations to Alamo 3rd grader, Grace DeBoer, and Dix Street Elementary 4th graders Aiden Wabeke and Alan Rogers on creating the name of the bus! We asked our elementary students to brainstorm and submit ideas; our marketing committee narrowed it down to three and the elementary kids voted on their favorite! The winners will be a part of our kick-off event in the spring.

The goal is to have the bus ready to go the week after school lets out. Right now, we are collecting books to fill the bus and gathering donations to purchase and refurbish the bus. Book donation boxes are currently set up at the following locations:

  • All Otsego schools
  • Mezzo Coffee House
  • B & C Trophy
  • Otsego United Methodist Church
  • Harding’s (Otsego location)
  • Stryker – Trade Center Way location

More donation sites will be added. If you own a business and would like to be a drop-off location, contact Kristin Jennison at kjennison@otsegops.org.

The start-up costs to refurbish and stock the shelves are estimated at $17,500. Along with start-up costs, there are ongoing costs for items such as drivers, maintenance, fuel, additional books and a summer-end celebration. We are currently seeking grants and public and private donations. Below is a donation level so we can recognize our community’s generosity. The recognition will be on the outside of the bus for two years.
