Plainwell and Otsego alumni gather for a photo before the game.
Alumni from Plainwell and Otsego came together for this year’s alumni game and raised $1400 for DC Strong to help make the lives of kids with cancer a little brighter.

One year ago, the Otsego High School Student Council put on an alumni basketball game to benefit Val Davis and her family. Val was an Otsego parent who was battling a rare brain disorder. She passed away later that spring, but OHS is keeping her memory alive by continuing the alumni game in her honor.

This year, the 2nd annual Val Davis Memorial Alumni Game brought in our cross-town rivals, Plainwell, to have our alumni go head to head. The students chose DC Strong as this year’s recipient of the fundraising dollars. Dustan Colyer, a Plainwell graduate who has been battling cancer on and off for 16 years, founded DC Strong with a few friends. They help bring some joy to kids with cancer by providing gifts or experiences. With that Plainwell connection, OHS thought it would be fun to bring Plainwell into the event.

About 25 alumni battled it out on the court for two 40-minute halves. Plainwell won by a few points in the end, but everyone had a great time and the game itself raised almost $600. After the game, OHS students participated in a lock-in with a volleyball tournament, games, movies and more. Their $5 cover charge and other donation opportunities brought in several hundred dollars bringing the total amount raised for the night to $1400.

Attendees also supported DC Strong by purchasing apparel at their table at the game and were able to meet Dustan and his team.
